Ethan is an artist currently living and working in Milwaukee, WI. A graduate of Cardinal Stritch University’s BA program, Ethan meandered through Milwaukee post-pandemic working in arts education and camera repair, taking photos all the while. Shekóli! Ethan ni wakhsʌknó·tʌ né oslunikéha. Onʌyoteˀa·ká· niwakatuwʌtsyó·tʌ. Wakkwáho niwakitaló·tʌ. Latitsitsyu·níhe twaknáke.
In the Oneida languageʼs Kanahelatúskla, (Thanksgiving Address), every major statement is bookended with the following:
Né· katsaɂ Ok nu·tukwató·ktʌ né· ʌskwatílhekeɂ né tho niyo·lé· waɂkkwe·ní· né· elhúwa. Wakewyʌtehtaɂuhátyesheɂ. Ta·tho niyohtúhak né· yukwaɂnikúh̲l̲a̲ɂ̲.
This is known as the "humbleness speech", and translates to something like "Now if I have forgotten something or made a mistake, please forgive me because this is what I am capable of doing at the moment. I am continuing to learn and grow. That is how it shall be resolved in our minds.”
I try to carry this ethos into everything I do: I may have been at this a long time,, but I am always willing to admit that I am wrong (even when it sucks!). Likewise, I am always seeking feedback and am willing to learn from others.
